Livermore Falls High School offers several AP classes to our students. Please refer to the list below: SENIOR AP ENGLISH Advanced Placement English is designed for students who have a special interest and achievement in English. It offers students an opportunity to read and discuss a wide variety of literature. Students will write literary responses, essays, critical analysis and research papers. In May students be expected to take the College Board Advance Placement Exam. Those students who do well on the exam will earn college credit for their senior English course work. JUNIOR AP ENGLISH (Language and Composition) AP Language and Composition is a course in effective writing and critical reading. Areas of study will include reviewing and analyzing the development and structure of language, utilizing different modes of writing, and responding analytically to several different genres of literature including nonfiction. The literature focus will be on American writers with careful attention on the connection found in U.S. History. In May, students will be expected to take the College Board Language and Composition Exam which may earn them college credit. Summer reading is expected and a contract must be signed by students and parents. AP STATISTICS AP Statistics covers the organizing of data, taking samples, doing experiments and simulations, foundations of inference, and conclusions and confidence. The course will rely on the use of T1-83 graphing calculators and will prepare students to take the AP Statistics exam. (Pre-requisites: junior standing, successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry and can be taken simultaneously with Algebra II.) AP CALCULUS Calculus offers the student an opportunity to do college-level work in calculus and related analytical geometry. Major content areas include limits, derivative of a function and applications, the indefinite integral and applications, transcendental functions, methods of integration and infinite sequence and series. Students who wish to take the Calculus AP exam in May will need to do additional individual work outside of the classroom. (Prerequisites: Algebra, Geometry, Honors Algebra and Advanced Math). AP PHYSICS B This course provides a systematic introduction to the main principles of physics and emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding and problem solving ability using algebra and trigonometry. In most colleges, this is a one year terminal course including a laboratory component and is not the usual preparation for more advanced physics and engineering courses. however, the B course provides a foundation in physics for students in the life sciences, pre-medicine, and some applied sciences, as well as other fields not directly related to science. Students are required to do summer preparatory work. ( Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 2, concurrent enrollment in Pre-calculus, and a pass in Academic Chemistry.) AP CHEMISTRY (this course will be offered 2007-2008 school year) Students must take and pass the Academic Chemistry course to be admitted to the AP Chemistry course, students must also have passed Algebra 2. This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, as freshmen, second year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register for courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses. ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY I & II( 2 years) AP history is a challenging course that is meant to be the equivalent of a freshman college course and can earn students' college credit. It is a two-year survey of American history taken in the junior and senior year. The junior year will cover the Age of Discovery to Industrialization and senior year Progressivism to the present. Solid reading and writing skills, along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and study are necessary to succeed. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, interpretation of original documents, and historiography. The signing of a contract and commitment to the completion of summer work are among the expectations of this class. Advanced Placement USH I will be an elective credit-completion of AP USH I & II will meet LFHS United States History credit requirement for graduation. |
