French I
Grades 9-12
1 elective credit
The first year of French is intended to develop the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Features of the course are:
• a strong focus on oral communications
• development of cultural awareness
• the building of a strong grammar base, with a step by step presentation of new
structures
• the introduction of new vocabulary in a theme, with a focus on daily life topics
• extensive practice through numerous and varied oral and written exercises set in
meaningful situational and personalized contexts. Students considering this course should be highly motivated with good listening and memorization skills.

French II
Grades 10-12
1 elective credit
French II is a continuation of the skills acquired in French I. The instructional goals are to stress communicative proficiency and cultural awareness.
Reinforcements will be made in the following skills:
• Cultural awareness about the Francophone world and French people
• listening comprehension skills
• communication skills in varied situations
• vocabulary expansion in context
This course emphasizes grammar analysis and verb tenses. It requires a commitment to concentration, as well as good listening and memorization skills.
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of French I with at least a 75 (80 beginning in 2009-10)

French III
Grades 11-12
1 elective credit
French III may be available to a limited number of students at Jay High School. Transportation will be provided.
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of French II

Spanish I
Grades 9-12
1 elective credit
The first year of Spanish is intended to develop the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

• development of cultural awareness

Spanish II
Grades 10-12
1 elective credit
Spanish II is a continuation of the skills acquired in Spanish I. The instructional goals are to stress communicative proficiency and cultural awareness.

• Cultural awareness about the Central & South American world and the Spanish people.
• listening comprehension skills
• communication skills in varied situations
• vocabulary expansion in context
